In the words of the indomitable Spice Girls, “spice up your life”
Yes really. If you want to see some real fat burning results ladies then prepare to get a bit spicy in the kitchen! We already know that everything good starts in the kitchen and if you’re lucky (or he is depending on how it goes in your household) it will also dial up the heat in the bedroom!
There’s actual science behind this too but as usual I have to caveat all my blog articles on fitness and nutrition with the fact that I’m not qualified to dish out proper advise. My blog is all my own fabfit research and I figure if it works for me it should work for you.
You all know about my daily turmeric and apple cider vinegar shot. I now have Franco taking it too. Not that he needs any more energy but he does work really long shifts and he’s definitely found that he’s got more sustained get up and go since I’ve been mixing him up this potent shot. He’s also sedentary most of the day so I’m helping him to inadvertently avoid a paunch! Shhhh - don't tell him!
I’m mentioning the fabfit shot again as its loaded with spices and it’s important to note that there are specific combos of spices that work better together, increasing their overall effectiveness when consumed that way - like the turmeric with black pepper for example. Double trouble! I've posted it again below for those of you who've not yet tried it. I now also add a healthy half teaspoon of cayenne to mine for some real ooomph on a morning!
Spice Spice Baby - here's the top herbs and spices for torching fat
Spices are great for lots of reasons, especially when it comes to their potential fat burning properties. It makes sense when you think about it. The tastier and more flavorsome your food, the more satisfying it will be and therefore the less likely you are going to be to grab junk food. They can also be fantastic at regulating blood sugar levels which will help to manage cravings.
I’m going to quickly cover off 12 essential spices that I have in my store cupboard and why.
We literally can’t live without the stuff in our house. The substance that gives pepper its flavour is called piperine and its been shown to help the body burn calories through a process called thermogenesis. It also helps your body to absorb the good nutrients in your food so it really is the perfect condiment. Pass me the pepper please.
Another staple in our house. The capsaicin compound in cayenne pepper is reported to release endorphins in your brain, the feel good chemical, so you’ll feel happier and be less likely to struggle with cravings that are often linked to depression (and boredom!) and a general dip in your happy vibes.
Can’t live without these beauties although Franco likes birds eye and haberno whereas I prefer a jalapeno. Still plenty of kick though for our Cat! Again, they’re credited with having a thermogenic quality and linked to both suppressing the appetite and burning belly fat.
Studies have proven that cardamom can help lower blood sugar levels – meaning less cranky cravings! Step away from the Haribo.
Known to stablise blood sugar levels. Lots of body builders add this into their black coffee when they are in pre competition training. It’s also anti-inflammatory hence why it goes into my fabfit daily shot and is amongst the top ranking most effective fat burning spices. Note, it doesn’t have the same effect when sprinkled on a Danish pastry or on French toast!
Again, studies do link this spice to revving up the old metabolism so that you should in theory burn more calories.
Again a very firm favourite in our Mexican inspired fridge at home. Franco calls it Cilantro and we have it with just about everything, especially fresh on top of our soups. As with cloves there is evidence that it can boost metabolism and doesn't it just taste delicious too. Winner.
Garlic can help to metabolize fats and carbohydrates. Garlic contains phytochemicals that work with the body to break down fat deposits so don't worry about your breath - get some garlic down you today.
Another ingredient in my fabfit shot because I love the additional fire and warmth it delivers. It can also help reduce cravings and boost metabolism – long as it’s not a gingerbread man you’re scoffing from Greggs! I love to put fresh lemon, ginger and mint in my water for work.
We’re talking about that thermogenic effect again with mustard – it helps with the digestion of your food too which is good news as I LOVE it. I prefer mine of the Dijon variety but apparently, if you want to enjoy the full fat burning effect, you should be eating a teaspoon of mustard seeds a day! Not sure about that one but you know I’m so going to be giving it a go! I’d best stock up on toothpaste and mouthwash this week.
Not so much a spice but this herb can help regulate and reduce blood sugar levels which lead to cravings and bad food decisions.
Last but definitely by no means least, I came across this golden beauty of a spice when I was researching how to get my own inflammation in check so that I could come off the horrible amitriptyline the Doctor had subscribed for my trapped neck and shoulder nerves last year. I had a check-up at the hospital last week and I am pretty much inflammation free so self-healing job done!
Turmeric is an all-round power house of an antioxidant and also helps protect your body from damaging free radicals. Quite simply I think its TURMERICTASTIC and I don’t even mind that my fingers are stained like a 40 a day fag hag!! And my tea towels, and my work surfaces. I am most likely ORANGE on the inside.
So there you have it – 12 herbs and spices that you should immediately go out and stock up on if you want to boost that metabolism and turn your body into a fat burning machine!!! Or you could just order in a regular Indian take-away! Pretty much all of the ingredient above are in my favourite Jal Frezi.
Just keep it nice and spicy to stay looking and feeling fabfit and thermogenically fantastic!
