You will all be pleased (I hope) to hear that my journey back to full health and fitness continues to flourish. I’m still taking my daily turmeric and apple cider vinegar shot and I’ve gone the longest in my adult life (I seriously kid you not!) without any alcohol. I’m starting to think I may have been one of those fully functioning alcoholics!!
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not doing the cliché dry January or anything like that. Not that I think there is anything wrong at all with giving your body a much needed annual re-set but January can be bleak and depressing at the best of times. It’s what red wine and curled up in front of open fires was made for. Save the detox for say, March!
However, my commitment to clean eating, moderately exercising and being fully focused on driving new client business through my day job, means that I’ve been too “positively” occupied to feel stressed and grab for what was that obligatory (and very necessary in 2017) glass of red at the end of the day. It’s a bloody marvel I tell you. I feel like a super charged Cat. I’m version X. My last re-boot was when I hit 40, creating version 2.0 so I’ve just skipped 3.0 though 9.9!
The benefits are many my FFF’s I have to say.
Energy – lots of it, bounding out of bed like a springer Spaniel at least 2 hours earlier than I did in 2017
Sleeping – like a log, previously unheard of as I was as frequent sufferer of insomnia
Clear skin – OK so I do actually have one spot today (right on the flippin’ end of my nose) but other than that, positively glowing (more on that to follow)
Healthy hair – the brittle dry snapped off ends from last year have gone and I’m back to having a full glossy mane
Actually, on reflection, I am becoming more Dog and less Cat by the day!
Anyway, my usual preamble aside, let’s get down to today’s fabfitforty secrets. My focus is skincare, one of my absolute favourite subjects.
Both Franco and I spend an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom! He loves to luxuriate in a bath (playing pinball and relaxing after a 12-hour shift sat on his backside in the taxi) and I just like to mess about in true girl’s world fashion! Face masks, serums, scrubs, dry brushing techniques, hair masks, fake tan, you name it, I’m all over it! It is of course one of the many benefits of not having children but I do also multi task. I’ve often got a soup on the go in the kitchen, whilst practicing headstands and wearing a hydrating face mask. You can picture the scene right? Crazy times chez moi!
As a few pics from me at the weekend will testify – I had time to do a peel, slap on more than a bit of make-up and to create a faux bob hair style on Saturday. What fun!
I also spent a few joyful hours re-arranging my wardrobe(s) into colour blocks and uncovered a couple of gems that I’ve not worn in years. Still being pretty much the same size at 46 as I was at 16, so of course they fit! Do not ladies throw away a little black lace dress. Recycle your clothes and send to charity, yes, but hang on to the black lace. It will continue to serve thee well.
My mind is meandering again. I’ve been meditating daily so far this year in an attempt to keep myself focused and productive but the minute I start blogging, that’s it, I’m away! Who knows where we’ll end up together today!
So back to the skincare yes?
Here’s my current routine and my favourite products so far in 2018.
I do a daily cleanse. A double cleanse on an evening to take away what might still be remaining from what little make-up I have worn during the day, with a nice invigorating facial cleanse in the shower on a morning. Here’s what I use. On a morning I am using a new product bought for me as a gift this Christmas and I love it. Smells amazing and has a real zing for your skin. It’s the Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm. On an evening I use the Thermal Cleansing Balm from Omorovicza followed by L’Oreal pure clay glow scrub.
Two or three time a week I will exfoliate. I love a proper scrub, getting into those pores down the side of the nose and especially my chin where I am developing quite the crease. May need to look into some filler otherwise I’m going to end up looking like Jimmy Hill! My current favourite is Refining Facial Polisher from Omorovicza.
I use an AHA and BHA peeling solution every Saturday morning. It tingles like hell but I love the sensation and my skin really is radiant afterwards. This stuff is amazing but don’t leave it on for too long. Mine is from The Ordinary and has a concentrate mix of 30% AHA and 2% BHA.
I’m currently using a couple of different serums, oils, moisturizer and a fantastic new primer that I received this Christmas.
During the day I follow up my cleanse with L’Oréal Fine Flowers toner (nothing fancy but its lovely and fresh and preps the skin ready for your other products). Next I apply The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic acid 2% with B5. Love this stuff. It’s packed full of moisture and gives your skin a super charge of hydration. Then I am currently following up with Emma Hardie Brilliance facial oil and her Prime and Protect with SPF30. They smell divine and give the skin a lovely glowing even texture. So much so that I’ve rarely even been wearing foundation so far this year.
For my eye area I have the 5% Caffeine solution from The Ordinary. Great for puffy eye bags. Although now that I’m not drinking red wine on an evening I have to say that the puffy eyes have been significantly reduced.
Every other night after my cleanse I use Liquid Gold from AHA which contains Glycolic Acid and helps gives my skin an even texture and so far, so good, is keeping age spots and dis-coloration at bay.
I have loads of other products on the shelf that I will dip in and out of using depending upon what I feel like my skin needs that week. Other notable favourites being the Alpha H Liquid Gold Smoothing and Perfecting Mask with Lavendar. Great or brightening and clarifying the skin.
I know, it all sounds like a lot but the trick, is just to make it part of your daily, habitual routine.
There’s a mix of price points amongst this skincare product selection from £3 up to £65 but most of the products I’m currently using are in the under a tenner bracket so definitely worth a try.
