This is what a call a serious grown up drink. I personally also find it rather revolting!
I do have a funny story to tell though about the first time I tried one.
I was away on what was I think my first business trip to Las Vegas. It was a big electronic retailing conference at the Venetian which as I recall had only just opened. I was totally delighted to be staying in a suite (they all were by the way not me being fancy pants or anything) which was literally bigger than my London flat.
As they do, there was an opening cocktail reception party. "Would madame like a dirty martini?" Hell yeah - I'd had a killer day in heels trawling the halls looking for the next hot product to bring back and flog to the UK masses.
Of course, I had no idea what one was but I didn't want the barman to know that.
YUK! Like washing back something from a seaman!!! All salty, briney and so strong I almost fell off my size 4's. I very quickly found a potted plant to tip mine into and haven't had one since.
However, for those of you with a more sophisticated and stronger palate than mine, try the recipe below!
This is a very classic dirty martini recipe
Dash of dry French vermouth
60ml of gin or vodka
5ml olive brine
Stoned cocktail olive for garnish
Stir all the ingredients together with ice in a mixing glass. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with olives.
Not for the feint hearted or the easily pissed! Bit dirty even for me!
