Sounds too good to be true right? Well at our age it probably is and we may have to resign ourselves to a permanent bit of pooch! However, there are some quick and simple hacks that you could introduce, like I do, to help minimize the bloating.
Get up 15 mins earlier and do some downward dogs!
Drag that sorry ass out of bed and although there may not be any actual signs of the Sun at this time of year, especially here in the UK, practice a few rounds of Sun Salutations. Yoga is particularly good for detoxifying and massaging your organs which will aid the cleansing and digestive process. It’s all those twisting poses. Actually, sod that, get out of bed early with the kids and all have a silly game of Twister! That should do the trick and put you all in a fabulous mood. Here's me looking like a right miserable old cow doing some one legged standing pose but trust me, I felt fabulous after! Clearly deep in concentration trying not to topple over whilst holding in my belly!!!
Relax, sit down and take time to enjoy your breakfast.
Don’t scoff it on the run as eating fast will cause you to take in too much air which will quickly fill you with gas. Eat mindfully and nutritionally first thing. My go to morning breakfast especially in the colder months, is organic Scottish porridge oats with Almond milk and Blueberries. Delicious and oh so nutritious.
Eat the right kind of fibre
Fruit is a great source of fibre as well as vitamins but certain fruits can be problematic and actually lead to more gas and bloating. Good old apples and pears for example. Try blueberries, raspberries, melon and pineapple instead. They taste amazing and will transport your senses to somewhere far more tropical too. Not the below though - looks flipping freezing there! Pass the pineapple a puffa.
Spit it out
The chewing gum! Dirty gertie's! Might help freshen that caffeine breathe but swallowing al that excess air ends up in your gut which, you got it, leads to yet more bloating. Try chewing on some fresh peppermint leaves or do what I do and always have a travel toothbrush and toothpaste in your office desk.
Ban the bubbles
Say NO to the soda. I did have a soda stream when I was little. Used to love a Cream Sofa from the pop man!!! Did anyone else have a pop man who came round? Those were the days. Dandelion and Burdock too! I’ve long since ditched the fizzy drinks. Try and drink herbal teas and of course water, water and yes, more water!
Don’t supersize your supper
Having a big meal late at night can leave you feeling full, uncomfortable and rotund! Keep it light, healthy, nutritious and again, eat slowly, deliberately and really savour all those lovely flavours. A nice piece of salmon with fresh veggies is a winner for me.
Grab some extra time in bed
We started the day getting up 15 mins earlier, try and end the day in bed earlier. There is no substitute for a good night’s sleep. Sleep is restorative on so many levels. If you are sleep deprived you’re likely to make unwise dietary decisions.
Like just pass me the caramel choco mocha latte already and the Danish pasty please!
So there you have it – 7 simple solutions to help you manage bloating – all tried and tested and regularly executed by yours truly.
Except this week. This week I'm stressed. Really stressed. So I've been sleeping in, skipping breakfast, downing the black coffee, followed by chewing gum, drinking red wine, followed by chewing gum, sitting down late to eat a huge plate of pasta then working into the wee hours on my blog.
And guess what?
Yup - I've a little fatty tum tum! At least I know seven ways to get it flat before the weekend though! #struggleisreal
