I’ve been away on business this week. A rare (these days at least) escape from the office to mingle with my industry peers and mentors. I love catching up on the latest innovations, product releases in the as seen on TV category (which is basically what I market in the UK as my day job) and of course – GOSSIP! Always there is gossip. I can’t possibly spill but there was some juicy stuff this year!
I’ve been coming to these events now for what must be at least 20 years. I’ve lost count. I’ve made so many great industry friends and feel blessed to have had the opportunity to both travel the world, broadening my horizons, but also to have met some incredibly inspirational, entrepreneurial and successful people along the way. Oh yes, and rich ones too! I’ve met plenty of those over the years (not all of them remained so). Remember, you are only EVER one product away from success and that private jet!
So I’ve just had to plan out and pack my business wardrobe for a trip to Venice. I have a reputation for over-packing. Oopsie - just one more pair of shoes.
I was in my 20’s when I first started going to these conferences and, sad to say, I probably dressed more like a stripper than an entrepreneur!!! Mind you, the locations back then were Monte Carlo, Miami and Vegas where, let’s face it, why the hell not! Lots of racy lacy things. All strappy and revealing. I like to think that I had the figure for it too back then and I definitely had the attitude and the SWAGGER! Still got that.
(this was me back in 2009 in Monte Carlo on the back of a boat in a silk Dolce and Gabbana dress! Actually, that outfit wasn't too OTT although it is completely backless! I still really love this one. That was when I had my fangs too - look at the teeth! She really was a Cat)
Now that I am very much 40 something, I feel like I need to be more, not demure as such, but appropriately dressed to be seen as there to do the real deals and not just for the networking. Although let's face it, that really is where and how the serious business gets done! Chin Chin. I'm also quite good at it so why not!
Another very distinguishing factor also being that back then it was all expenses paid courtesy of a large London media company whereas these days it’s all my own blood, sweat and investment! Hence why I’m staying in the cheap seats around the corner and not the conference hotel either. This time next year Rodney! Also hence why I'm recycling my wardrobe. More on that below.
So, what does a fabfitfortyfashionista, on business in Italy, with her main objective being to snare more clients and MONEY, actually pack to wear!
Well……..I’m glad you asked!
In my case it is mostly All Saints silk print dresses. Actually, this year it was 100% All Saints. Not a The Kooples outfit in site which I have to say is unheard of.
Last count I had 7 various different All Saints silk dresses in my wardrobe. I brought 5 with me as I was only there for two days so even I couldn’t manage that many outfit changes. Although I did manage to spill an entire cafe latte down one of them so it was fortuitous that day that I had back up at base.
I adore the feel of silk against the skin.
So sumptuous and in this strangely humid June UK weather, lovely and cool too.
It makes you feel elegant, feminine and sophisticated, yet it has the ability to hang and drape insouciantly against your curves in just a nod to the come hither! That 20-year-old wannabe pole dancer is still in there after all! No use denying her presence completely.
I opted to travel in a white All Saints silk shirt dress with a beautiful lilac and black print and tonnes of interesting asymmetric drapery and detailing that bring attention to all the right places. It's light, comfortable and just a little bit sassy.
I had a couple of other carefully coordinated All Saints silk dresses planned out for the rest of the business trip . Unfortunately I didn't get any good pics sorry! You'll have to use your imagination and just take my word for it that silk and business really do mix well.
I do very much believe that dressing appropriately, NOT dressing for your age, is important and a silk dress is a fabulously feminine but still empowering outfit for any self-respecting business babe to rock. And I am a #businessbadassbabe - trying to be anyway.
I’ve curated a couple of my current favourites for your delight and delectation. Would love to know what you wear when you need to bring your A game to the table!
These are all this season 2017 All Saints. On account of my financial position I didn't buy any new ones specifically for this trip but you'd never know that mine are now all a few years old. Another reason why you should invest in Silk.
I’m now back from what was indeed a really exciting trip filled with lots of new business opportunity and potential and I did indeed showcase a my silk dresses and one jumpsuit! OK, so that one wasn't quite silk but it does give a nod to my new more refined, pared back and sophisticated look (who am I kidding!!!!) and I just had to share that fabulous backdrop. #sorrynotsorry
Venice, you were a delight. Although you can keep the midget bites! Yup - woke up today with about 8 of the bastards that nearly drove me potty during my morning #barre workout!
