What’s the one piece of make-up you just couldn’t live without? That single item that would bring your world crashing down around your feet if it was taken away from you! Yes, it really is that dramatic, the utter fear and terror of not having it in your life!!! The very idea of it running out brings you out in a cold sweat and palpitations. What on earth will you do if you don’t have a chance to get to Selfridges in time and re stock! The world is just not ready to see you nor you face it without this essential piece of beauty armory!!
For me, it’s the mascara.
Was there ever such a genius invention capable of complete transformation. Taking you from a squinty eyed moggy into a total glamour puss. I literally don’t leave the house, like EVER, without lashings of mascara. Unless I’ve had an LVL or a full set of lashes – but that’s a post for another day.
Mascara really is a girls’ best friend and from the drug store to the department store we are literally spoilt for choice with versions specifically designed to create length, volume, thickness, curl, definition and separation. You can have it waterproof, with conditioning formulas and all shapes of wands and applicators. You can also go for colour too. I remember my mum wearing electric blue mascara when I was a kid. It was all the rage as I recall!
I’ve road tested loads of them over the years in my holy grail quest to discover the perfect formula that’s going to give me the definition I want but that won’t clump or look too gloopy or spidery. No one wants clumpy mascara. Well actually, clearly some girls do as it’s a look that I see oh so often. Thick clumpy badly applied mascara. Loaded on to the max. Come on girls! Do yourselves a favour, sort your application technique out!
I am currently using Georgio Armani Eyes to Kill Classico in Black. It’s a great all in one for volumising, length and definition and you can build up and create an intense and high impact look so I find it works really well from day to night. It doesn’t clump or smudge either. I’ve had lovely mascaras before that go on great but by the end of the day I’ve more under my eyes and on my cheeks than I have on my lashes! No-one wants to leave work looking like a panda.
You obviously can’t write a post on make-up or mascaras without a nod to L’Oreal. Is there nothing they’re not fabulous at inventing and reinventing when it comes to the world of cosmetics? If you want to have really fanned out seriously volumised lashes then L’Oreal Paris Volume Million Lashes Feline Mascara is the one for you. It has a special curved angled brush with a mix of both long and short bristles which means it can capture every lash. It also has a conditioning formula with argan and camellia oil.
I’m also a huge fan of Lancôme and this mascara is one that I frequently go back to and am never disappointed by. Lancôme Hypnose Volume-A-Porter is one of those fail safe beauty staples. All the volume and drama, none of the clumps. Really I don’t know why I just don’t stick with this as I have to say it’s pretty hard to beat.
The last mascara I had before I decided to try out the Georgio Armani was from Charlotte Tilbury and I’ve bought this a few times for girlfriends too. Charlotte has such a fantastic pedigree in the make-up industry that you can trust she will have developed a sensational and sassy product. I went for her Legendary Lashes product although I have also had her Full Fat Lashes. It creates a bold, intense and glamourous look so I use this one mainly for a night time look. This is great if you want longer and thicker, dramatic looking lashes. It’s not waterproof though and I have recently had a period of intense and regular crying! I can confirm that it goes literally everywhere if you cry so make sure you’re in an emotionally stable place if you’re wearing this otherwise you’ll look less like a Hollywood red carpet legend and more like an extra from a horror movie.
My name sake, CD, that’s Christian Dior, is also a great go to luxury make-up brand and always has fabulous innovative product launches every season. Again, tried it, love it and can definitely recommend it. Diorshow Iconic OverCurl is water proof and long lasting. Creates lovely high definition curl. You can’t really go wrong with this product either.
A special mention to a couple of other mascaras that I really think are fab and might not be ones that you would necessarily try out but that I really think are worth a go.
I’ve not really tried much of his other make-up but I was talked into purchasing Kevyn Aucoin The Expert mascara by one of the fab experts in Space NK ( I could move into that store – I just love it!) and I was not disappointed. This has a really creamy formula and creates superb length for a very soft, full, luscious and dramatic look.
It’s an expensive one but Chantecaille Faux Cils Mascara is a super volumising and luxurious mascara that has built in minerals and peptides to also condition and regenerate your lashes. It also has a lovely rose water based formula which smells fresh and gorgeous but which means the product has real staying power in even the most humid of conditions. A great holiday purchase leaving you looking glamorous poolside!
And finally, at the lower budget end and coming up time and time again as a recommendation from various trials, is Max Factor Masterpiece. It’s an old school favourite and delivers results and is fabulous value for money. This one has a thin brush compared to some of the options reviewed above which is excellent for creating precision, separation and length so that you can really get into and around your lashes to shape your own lashes for a lovely overall effect.
It’s difficult to really pick an overall winner as in today’s competitive cosmetics industry and with so much innovation constantly happening, there really are some sensational products on the market so really you can’t go wrong.
So say peekaboo with your perfectly framed peepers to your fabulously fanned full fat lashes!
