As it goes I’m a fully-fledged bespectacled wearer. I’ve a drawer at home resplendent with various bins I've collected over the years. I’m also teetering very much on the edge of now requiring bifocals! Bloody age related problems again. My glasses are on and off so much these days I’m all blurred lines! I do so LOVE a pair of good frames. If you have to wear them, embrace them I say. After all, you’d never put a valuable piece of art up on the wall without giving the framing and exposition of it some careful consideration first. An Ikea Ribba frame isn’t for the discerning and frankly my dear, I am nothing if not discerning!
So given that I’m still on a summer vibe, I thought that I would do my trawl of the best sunnies around this season and also some quick recommendations on what style to go for to suit your face shape. As you know by now, dressing to accentuate your best features and not giving two hoots about age appropriacy is a major theme of mine. Who cares how old you are when you know how to own and rock your style.
First up a quick analysis of the various face shapes. Which one are you?
Round – you got it, you have a soft and circular shaped face where the width and length are likely to be evenly proportioned
Oval – so your face is well balanced and proportioned with a chin that’s slightly narrower than your forehead
Heart – you have a broader forehead, and narrower jawline and chin. I’d say this one used to be me, but as I get older and lose some of the volume from my cheeks I’m becoming decidedly more Oval.
Square – not manly as such but you’re going to have a more boxy, strong and angled face.
The great news as ever is that there will be a style to suit you and again, as I always say, the trick to really looking fabulous is to pick a pair that fits and flatters your face, and not to just follow the fashion.
You’re an FFF, who cares what the kids are wearing this season.
These are outrageously fabulous from Bottega Veneta. They have a price tag to match but I LOVE them so I'm putting these here to frame my blog post!
You don’t even need to take my word for it. There are plenty of on-line sites out there that will help you determine and then select the best shaped shades to suit you. You can upload a pic and they’ll provide their recommendations on what they think suits you best.
So what should you be looking for then?
Round – soft and feminine faced you can go for more geometric and obtuse lines to create the illusion of contouring. A rectangular pair of frames will make your face look longer and thinner. You can opt for oval, round, rectangle, wrap or wayfarer style and will look stylishly chic and feminine.
Oval - good for you. Just about any style goes but a great choice is a rectangle frame to create a horizon to your own natural vertical! Any glasses accentuated to the sides with an upwards wing will create the illusion of cheekbones. Gotta love that! You’re definitely going to rock the cat eye, the pilot shape and the butterfly frame. This gives you loads of fashion forward options hot off the 2017 catwalk.
Heart – Draw attention downwards and elongate your look with a well-balanced frame. Go for lighter colours, a slimmer temple and a more exaggerated bottom. You can play around with cat’s eye designs, butterfly styles, round and pilot style. You can really have a lot of fun with a heart shaped face so be playful with your choice of frame.
Square – you’ve already got your own bold and beautiful angular shapes going on. Balance that geometry with sexier, curvier and more playful featured frames. Butterfly shapes are going to look great as will semi-rimless designs. Dare to be a bit more bold.
So there you have it. Another round up of what’s available on the high street and my high end fashion favourite selection. There are options from £10 to £1000. Only you will know the price tag. Just wear your shades with sass and swagger and please make sure they have the proper UV protection.
Don’t be afraid to experiment and as ever and try on lots of different styles and challenge your normal perception of what you think looks right. Also consider taking a fashion critical friend with you but one who’s got your fabulous backside! You'll soon see them squirm if you look more like Dame Edna than Queen Kate.
