I’ve been partial to a patent shoe since I was about 3. I loved my shiny little black buckle up shoes and I had a very fetching pair of brown leather and suede kitten heels when I was about 9. It quickly developed into a full on fetish when at the age of around 13 (I might have been older but I was definitely only just at high school) my Dad (yes Dad, not Mum) took me to Leeds to buy me my first ever leather jacket for Christmas.
It was a gorgeously soft black Napa leather boxy blouson affair. So 80’s it hurt!
I loved that jacket and I was possibly the first person in the school to have one. Oh yes always a forward thinking fashionista me! I remember the smell when we went into the store. There was wall to wall leather in every shape, size and colour. I ALMOST, almost, bought a red jacket which would have been incredibly daring of me at that age but I think sense (or rather my Dad) stepped in. It was remarkably like the red one above from Top Shop! Actually, my jacket was completely like this but in black. The smell of leather still today holds a nostalgia and happy memory of a shopping trip out with my Dad. I can’t remember all the details but I know for sure that we would have also gone out for a special lunch together in Leeds and I would have had either a Knicker Bocker Glory or a Banana Split for dessert. Back in those days I mostly ate starters and desserts and generally skipped the main meal! Naughty I know.
Moving on I’ve literally owned at least 10 leather jackets since then. God knows where they’ve all gone to? A few are probably still in the coal house of the flat in Islington I used to own (although I hope they were finally taken to the charity shop when it was clear I was never coming back for them!)
I bought a couple in Camden Market. I even had the baby blue, white and black biker jacket (same as the one Posh Spice famously wore) as it matched the Vespa me and my ex used to ride around on at the time. I also had an amazing distressed grey one from Whistles in the softest ever leather. I’m sad not to have that one still. I loved it and I got my special discount at the time from Amber. Remember Amber? I used to love a Whistles friends and family staff discount. Whistles was my go to label back then.
I once went out looking for new wardrobes for the Islington flat and came back with a couple of his and hers Belstaff’s!! Sadly, mine had to be auctioned off the other year so that I could pay my rent but I will own one again one day soon. We upgraded the Vespa for a Cruiser Chopper Chips style bike (I think it was a Yamaha) but anyway, it required all together cooler leather attire! Man did we look the business cruising around Hampstead on a Sunday afternoon in out Belstaff's!
Fast forward to today and my wardrobe is chocca full of leather. Although not as much in 2017 as there was in 2016!
I have three pairs of trousers, a knee length skirt, a dress, a top but just the one jacket currently as the 2 All Saints black leather ones I owned also went in the infamous eBay cull of 2016!!!
You knows it too – I also have underwear with leather trim. Special occasion wear only! It’s by Marlies Dekker. Check it out – it’s not at all as pervy as it sounds! That's not the set that I have below but this is from the same label and I rather like it.
Would you believe it too – some of my favourite leather pieces recently have been from Marks and Spencer’s?
The dress and the trousers I frequently wear are both M&S and the leather is just sumptuous. The pricing was incredibly reasonable too. £200 I think for the dress which is just gorgeous and £99 for my leather fronted trousers which are super flattering and so comfortable to wear.
No surprise that most of my other leather has come from All Saints or The Kooples. They both do the rock chick look that I love so much to an absolute tee.
If I was told that I could only ever shop one label ever again it would be The Kooples. Sadly I've not had the budget recently for any new purchases so even more reason to keep trim and in shape so that I can still fit into all my fab pieces.
Anyone who knows me will have seen me regularly wearing my trusty The Kooples leather biker jacket. It’s super well-worn and no amount of financial hardship will tempt me to part from it! Funnily enough it’s not black either. It’s a kind of purply blue greyish number. Super thick and heavy and I absolutely love it. It’s cool and edgy and always makes me feel a little bit Kate Moss whenever I wear it!
So ladies, don’t be afraid to throw on a bit of leather from time to time. You really can style it your way. A leather skirt with a crisp white shirt or simple polo neck looks sexy smart whereas a pair of leather trousers with a chunky knit sweater and biker boots creates a failsafe street cool vibe.
I’ve said it before, you just got to own and rock your leather look like the bad ass FFF that you are.
Here’s a round-up of some of the items I’m COVETING and been adding to my virtual basket recently! The Tom Ford black leather jacket seriously has my name written all over it.
