It was difficult finding an interesting I for my A-Z of skincare power ingredients but today I've plumped for Idebenone.
There are lots of reviews out there on the internet about this ingredient and whether it should be heralded as a new wonder drug or not. Initially available as a nutritional supplement only, it is now starting to feature as an ingredient in some skin care products but does it actually do anything or is it more marketing hype?
As you all know, I’m a sucker for a bit of brand marketing and a sexily packaged product!
You would think, given my day job, that I would most definitely know better but I do get sucked in by all the new wonder ingredients out there claiming to deliver the holy elixir of youth.
CoQ10 is a highly effective and naturally occurring antioxidant, critical for cellular energy production. Idebenone is closely related to CoQ10 in its structure and there’s evidence to suggest that it is in fact superior at delivering effective anti-ageing benefits.
It’s all to do with oxidative stress apparently.
As we all know, external stress factors such as UV rays, free radicals, pollution and smoke all play havoc on the skin. According to researchers at Elizabeth Arden, 80% of ageing is caused by external factors and not genetics.
Anti-oxidants like idebenone neutralize and counteract these free radicals thereby preventing further cell damage. It also stimulates nourishment of our mitochondria which helps maintain happy, healthy and active cells. Active cells, mean youthful cells.
There are a couple of notable brands I’ve found that have products containing Idebenone.
Presage MD has a 5% and 3% serum to tackle deep wrinkles and Priori has a whole line of complimentary anti- ageing skincare featuring this ingredient.
Rejuvaskin also has a 1% serum and whilst I’ve not yet tried it, I have previously looked into the Prevage line from Elizabeth Arden. They have a complete range which has been specifically formulated to visibly erase wrinkles and the damaging effects caused by sun damage. Everything in the Prevage range features this super charged anti-oxidant power ingredient. It's definitely on my radar for testing out.
When I do, I’ll report back with my results and recommendations. Until then, carry on slapping on the SPF ladies, especially now that spring has sprung and keep fighting those free radicals!!
