Sounds like a big scary word but in our A-Z glossary of important beauty ingredients, today’s D is for something called Dimethicone.
It’s a great addition to skincare products as it assists in refining pores, filling lines and wrinkles and can also be used as a protective skin barrier, to defend against harmful environmental factors.
It’s popular in serums and primers because it creates a nice matte finish allowing for your other products to effortlessly glide on afterwards. It’s also an important emulsifying ingredient which means that it helps to stop your other ingredients from separating and breaking down therefore maintaining the integrity and shelf life of your product.
There is some debate though around this product. It's effectively a silicone and this ingredient does have a tendency to clog pores which can be a bad thing in acne prone skin. Personally I actively look for products that DO NOT have this active as, after a process of much elimination recently, I’ve pin pointed that this something that definitely seems to contribute to the small raised spots (caused by clogged pores) that I sporadically suffer from.
On the plus side it really does create a beautiful silky smooth texture.
It’s one of the principle ingredients for example in Estee Lauder’s Idealist Pore Minimizing Skin Refiner which I have to say, I do love the results of. So I do myself persevere and occasionally suffer the consequences a few days later! All in the name of beauty my lovelies!
So it’s up to you really.
Do you prefer to be silicone free or do you love the targeted results this ingredient ultimately delivers?
