We all love a bit of sun, I for one am guilty as charged, but did you know that it’s actually the sun’s rays that are responsible for 90% of all ageing, even on the predominantly cloudy days that we have here in the UK. So opting for a moisturizer or primer that contains an SPF is most definitely the smart FFF’s choice, whether you’re sunning yourself in Marbella or just headed up to M&S on Brentwood high street!
As a rough guide, imagine your unprotected skin can last 15 minutes before it resembles the hue of a lobster (yours might be more or less depending upon your skin type but I most definitely have the transparent skin of the Celt) then if you use a factor 30 SPF you’ll have 6.5 hours before you turn a brighter shade of pink!
But that’s not just why it’s important. UVA/B rays are really damaging and ageing to the skin. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but they cause wrinkles, age spots, pigmentation, dark spots and worse still, can lead to skin cancer too. Even on a cloudy day in the winter those rays can do their damage. It’s even more important to be using an SPF if, like me, you use exfoliators, retinol based serums and, scrubs and microdermabrasion in your skincare routine as you are constantly renewing and producing lovely new fresh skin cells that are young and frisky and need to be protected!
Good news is that you don’t have to slather yourself in a thick sun cream every day. Lots of leading cosmetic skincare labels that introduced a minimum SPF15 broad spectrum into their daily moisturisers and many foundations now have a built in SPF too.
It would be wrong to say avoid the sun completely when it has so many feel good factors and let’s face it, right now we’re probably all hankering after a little winter retreat somewhere totally tropical.
I had to scrape ice off my little Fiat 500 this morning before I headed out to Pilates. My hands were frozen and my cheeks were burning from the bracing and icy Essex air. I was still wearing my Omorovicza Complexion Perfector with its SPF 20.
Actually this is a FANTASTIC multi tasking product and one that I highly recommend. They call it the “swiss army knife of the beauty industry” because it’s so multi-tasking. It’s a moisturizer, foundation, sunscreen, concealer and anti-ageing cream all in one. You really can’t go wrong with this product, especially if you’re a bit of a lazy Jane!
This multi tasking day cream also contains gentle acids which will additionally exfoliate the skin to counter act pigmentation and brighten up any dark or age spots that you might be developing as your skin matures.
It’s time to face facts ladies. Whilst a tan might look good on you, wrinkles and age spots don’t so next time you are looking to invest in a new day time moisturizer, be sure to opt for one that contains an SPF otherwise you might as well just flush your cream with your money down the loo!
All that talk of sun screens has given me a touch of weekend wanderlust! I think I might have a pinterest session this afternoon looking for beautiful places to visit later this year.
