So winter has really descended upon us this week. The cold chill in the air bringing with it beautiful snow flakes that lasted for all of 5 mins and sodding chapped, cracked lips that will probably last at least 5 days!
If you're like me then you probably have a lip balm in every handbag you own, your car, by the bed, on your desk at the office and pretty much anywhere else that you're guaranteed to spend any amount of time.
I LOVE a good lip balm and believe me, I've tried them all from Vaseline to Creme de La Mer and everything else in between. My current own favourite is Kukui Oil Wonder Balm from lovely label Connock London which has a gorgeous velvety texture. Its multi-tasking too so you can apply it to pretty much anywhere that needs a bit of extra TLC. I've been rubbing a bit of it into my cuticles to keep them soft. The whole range is just divine.
But back to looking after your lips and perfecting the perfect pout!
In this cold weather you really need to step up your lip care regime which means going beyond a slick of balm when they start to feel a bit parched.
Really you need to be approaching your lip routine like you would that of your skincare and carry out that all important exfoliation as well as investing in a maintenance mask, plumping product as well as your final favourite balm for hydration. With those four steps you'll have kissable lips all year round so get ready to pucker up!
Yes really - there are such things as lip exfoliators and they're a great way to prep your lips and get rid of my flaky dry bits that you might have. You could just make up your own DIY exfoliator, mixing your favourite balm with some sugar granules and a bit of honey. Just make sure you don't start licking and biting your own lips!!!
I've been using the Lip Scrub from Rodial. It's really easy to apply with its foam applicator tip so there's no mess. It contains Vitamin E and Mango extract so smells pretty yummy too.
I'm not a smoker and never have been but I have started to notice a few fine lines around my lips that make me look a bit measly mouthed! The overall effect is a bit like a cat's arse! Not attractive. So I've been on the hunt for a treatment to try and iron out my wrinkly tash! I love to smother my lips in Zelens Lip Treatment Oil but I've also just discovered Kaplan MD Lip Mask which I've been using to help plump up this area. You apply thoroughly, wait and then remove. It contains that all important wonder ingredient, hyaluronic acid, so you're going to both feel and notice a plumping and overall increased hydration.
You might also want to invest in a good lip plumper. No-one wants to have trout pout but as we get older our lips really start to thin and recede so a plumping product can be a good way to test the water before considering anything more long term. Most of the plumpers available will contain a formula including caffeine and niacin (a form of Vitamin B) which basically cause localised swelling which give you that bee stung look. You might not want to adopt this look on a daily basis but its great for a night out. I have Lip Fusion XXL Advanced Lip Therapy and if definitely does the trick for me.
Your final product especially for the lips should be intensely hydrating. Packed with lovely ingredients like shea butter, plant seed oils and other nourishing properties to help keep your pout in perfect condition. Everyone has a favourite balm and they come with all kinds of price tags from your classic Carmex at around £3.00 to Creme de La Mer, The Lip Balm at £45.00. Its got a lovely texture and a zingy minty flavour. Expensive but amazing all the same!
