Ok, so I'm a little but obsessive when it comes to skincare and I do love to try out a new gadget.
I've been disciplined about my daily cleanse, tone and moisturise routine since I was a teenager.
I suffered from debilitating acne when I was a teenager; probably not something many people know about me but something which contributed to making me painfully shy. I sported a fringe for literally the whole of my teens hiding full scale angry red spots across the entire surface of my forehead.
Due in part to my meticulous skincare routine (yes I am a tad OCD!) no-one would ever guess that I suffered so badly. Not a pox mark or scar in sight today!
However, if I had been left with any signs of those teenage woes, they would definitely have been eradicated by now with regular use of one of the fabulous sonic cleansing brushes available on the market today.
They really are worth the investment and I would not be without mine.
I was an early adopter in this respect.
I discovered mine about 15 years ago on a trip to a spa at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. I was away on a punishing business trip (yes really!) so figured I deserved it. ( I had a particularly understanding boss at the time who was great at signing off my expenses - love you Sian!)
As part of the facial I was having that day, the therapist used a Clarasonic (pictured above) and I was immediately hooked.
My skin had quite literally never been as squeaky clean or as radiant after a treatment. I bought one there and then, call it my Remington Steel moment (even though it had a US adapter and power supply and I was broke). My skin and I have never looked back since.
A couple of years later, I would in fact go on to market the Nutrasonic brand here in the UK (until I had a run in with the greedy product owner ) but that's another story. Their unit was still pretty impressive although the colour scheme a bit to girlie for my tastes.
So what's all the fuss about and are these gizmos really more effective than good old fashioned soap, water and elbow grease?
Well the straight answer is YES.
Most claim to remove up to 6 times more dirt and grime than regular cleansing alone and oscillate (that's tiny little vibrations of the brush head) up to 300 times per second. That's some serious cleansing going down - imagine your little fingers trying to go that fast! The image below shows before cleansing, regular cleansing and sonic cleansing.
Check out this fabulous video demonstration under UV light highlighting just how effective the Clarisonic version is at really removing all traces of make-up.
But of course, not all Sonic cleansing brushes are created equal and in fact, not all sonic cleansing brushes are even sonic! So buyer beware.
Luckily you have me on hand to guide your though the best on the marketplace.
Clarisonic Mia Fit, £170
This is great for sensitive skin.
Not the best value for money but seriously effective with full clinically backed results.
This company are constantly innovating and I love this portable travel sized unit because it has a gentle yet vigorous setting which means you can use it on even the most sensitive of skin. Quite literally, in just 80 seconds a day, you WILL have visibly smoother, cleaner and more radiant skin. Its the perfect shape to fit into the palm of your hand, takes up no space at all, so is great for travelling. Once you get into a good routine, you want to stay in one, wherever in the world you are.
All in all, well worth the dent in your wallet. This particular version has 2 speed settings (normal and a power cleanse) is pre programmed, fully waterproof, rechargeable and has a generous 2 year warranty.
Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush, £75
This works especially well on more oil prone skin.
Dermatologist developed as you'd expect from Clinique and with a tilted head design and two different types of bristles providing precision Swiss engineering. Great price that certainly won't break the bank but super effective action which goes to work immediately, dislodging impurities, dirt and pollution that every day cleansing just leaves behind.
The tilted action makes for more angled and targeted cleansing of those hard to reach areas. Its lightweight, sleek and compact and features an automatic shut off.
Bit of a no brainer really is this one. A great entry unit and price if you're still not sure about sonic cleansing.
This one is great for a really deep down and dirty super cleanse.
It features a warming facial plate which is just superb at removing even waterproof mascara and it looks seriously stylish too as you'd expect from Japanese innovation.
This unit comes with its own patented "micro-bubble system" technology meaning you can create a luxurious micro foam with literally any of your favourite cleaners, gels or foams. Its fully re-chargeable and cleanses to dermatologist level. (See - you've saved yourself a tonne of money just there!)
The heated elements have the added bonus of soothing tired and puffy eyes so this is a really tech savvy piece of kit with plenty of bang for your buck.
Those are my current pick of the bunch but there are plenty out there to try and I'd love to hear about your own favourites. Please send me an e-mail with your comments and feedback.
So what are you waiting for, beat the brush hour and bring the spa to your bathroom!
