Today we're talking not just good, but great jeans.
The denim kind, not the ones you're born with. They've already made you into a Triple-F and brought you to discover my 40 plus musings! Now I'm here to lend a hand with some real advise on styling and how to choose the right pair for your shape and size.
Believe you me, I've tried them all over the years and with varying degrees of success. I had a pair at school that were covered in patches, I hand stitched a pair with floral tributes when I was at Uni and much to my parents horror, I paid an eye watering amount once for a pair with rips and designer holes!
I've worn tight ones, baggy ones, stonewashed ones, acid washed ones, blue ones, black ones, flared ones and high waisted ones. I must have gone through a 100 pairs already in my lifetime. At last count I had a more modest 10 pairs in my current wardrobe.
So how do you pick the right jeans for you?
You want to pick a pair that show off your shape in the best fit and cut for your body type. We're in our 40's now so we should have learned a thing or two about what suits us. No point trying to shoe horn those little sausage legs into a skinny tight pair of short legged white denims!
The great news is that the perfect pair is out there just waiting for you.
Athletic Body - you're likely to have more muscular thighs and calves therefore a good choice would be a flared or bootcut pair to balance out your silhouette, making your legs look longer and accentuating your waist.
Curvy Girl - you probably struggle to get a pair that fit your more petite waist that you can also squeeze that luscious bum and hips into. Don't be afraid to show off what momma gave you - this is a great body type to really own and rock a pair of well engineered denims. What you want to be looking for are rear pockets that are angled in and placed closer together - they're going to give the optical illusion of a smaller booty!
Super flattering, especially on the bum. Try these Waven Freya skinny jeans at just £50.00
Boy Shape - with your tiny hips you want to focus on creating a more compact silhouette so tight and ankle skimming will be great for making your frame look more feminine. Or you could try something totally different and go for a boyfriend style which will hide the fact that your hips are so narrow.
These grey wash boyfriend style jeans from Citizens of Humanity are really chic and casual at the same time, £300.00
Apple - steer away from anything that's going to bag at the knees and make you look even more rounded. Invest in a pair that accentuate and show off your slimmer legs and fit comfortably and flatly over your tummy area.
These jeans from high street favourite Karen Millen are a great option. They're cropped but high rise so super flattering. £90.00
Tall - you need to find a pair that have a longer inside seam but you'll probably also have a slightly longer torso so need to avoid "builders bum" syndrome! Opt for a pair with a slightly higher rise than usual.
Check out this pair from Armani with a high-rise at £140.00.
Petite - think about what colour you wear and also how the denim is dyed. If you have a vertical fading down the middle for example, you're going to create the illusion of a longer and sleeker silhouette. These are a great cut and fit for the petite amongst us.
If all else fails, you can always head along to my favourite place, Selfridges London where they boast the world BIGGEST denim department.
It's a whopping 26,000 square foot space that quite literally houses thousands of styles and hundreds of exclusive designer and high street styles. Their prices range from £11 to £11,000! Yes, that's right, £11,000 plus they have over 11,000 pairs to choose from. They even offer a full fit and evaluation service so you can't fail but to find the perfect pair for you.
So which jeans do I wear?
If you know me then you already have the answer to this.
I just went and checked those10 pairs I currently have.
7 are from The Kooples, 1 from Maje, 1 from Sandro and 1 from All Saints. These are my current No 1 favourites. Their Franny Waxed jeans with gemstone detail. Channeling that rock chick again aren't I!
